Diversity Research and Enhanced Access for Minorities (DREAM)
Tools for working with clients with limited functional literacy / April 2017
In much of our clinical work, we encounter clients who struggle with literacy and therefore are less compliant with completing homework tracking sheets or less able to understand psychoeducational materials we provide as adjuncts to therapy. In an effort to better serve these clients, we created a set of handouts and worksheets that we have found to be useful for many of our clients, especially those who speak a primary language other than English and/or who find it difficult to read conventional handouts and materials. We describe the creation of these handouts in a forthcoming article in The Behavior Therapist. Included below are the generic templates we developed for these handouts and some examples of handouts for specific behavioral health concerns. Feel free to download them, customize them, and suggest additions!
